Don’t underestimate the power of your bite
In the unfortunate (although fairly likely) event that you experience tooth loss at some point in your life, it can cause serious problems for the rest of your mouth when left untreated. If your dentist recommends a bridge, it’s not just for the sake of aesthetics. Did you know that your bite can generate as much as 200 pounds of pressure on the molars? When you have missing teeth, those forces are redistributed to your other teeth which can create a number of problems like cracks and breaks, as well as TMJ/TMD or jaw joint problems.
Do I need a bridge?
If you have one, or several missing teeth creating a gap in your smile with fairly healthy teeth on either side, you may be a good candidate for a dental bridge. Find out for sure if this is the best solution for you in a comprehensive consultation with your dentist.
How does it work?
A bridge consists of one or more fabricated teeth, secured on either side to your natural teeth with the help of dental crowns. This is the most secure way to replace missing teeth and redistribute the forces in your mouth back to their proper balance. Your bridge will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth!
Fixed bridges (secured with crowns) stand up to the test of time, and are maintained just the same as the rest of your teeth. You can brush, floss, and enjoy your favorite foods at your leisure (although of course you should be diligent in eating a healthy diet and maintaining good oral hygiene).
In the case that you are hesitant about a permanent bridge, or other circumstances discussed between you and your dentist, we may fit you with a temporary bridge that will need to be removed for proper cleaning, and will be secured with metal clasps instead of crowns.
What are the benefits?
There are many benefits to replacing missing teeth with a bridge, including:
- Fill the gap in your smile
- Redistribute proper bite forces
- Prevent surrounding teeth from moving
- Enjoy your favorite foods again
- Maintain just like regular teeth
- Look, feel & function just like natural teeth
- Smile with confidence again
